Today is a special day: the subject of my MA Thesis, Britney Spears, turns 28 years old (she’s still alive, yay!). After all this 2012 negativity below, let’s celebrate Britney’s birthday with something positive: her performance at the 2000 VMAs. I think I would’ve sold my soul to look like her when I saw this as a fourteen-year-old.
A few years ago “guerrilla artist” Banksy replaced hundreds of Paris Hilton’s albums with his own remixes featuring tracks such as Why Am I Famous? What Have I Done? What Am I For? That same year his US art show was attended by the likes of Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Christina Aguilera. The street artist raked in over $6 mil and won the front page of the NY and LA Times.
Apart from my own self-indulgence, this blog aims to comment on the madness of popular culture and what the four strands of the American Dream- the dignity of the common individual, democracy as the guarantee of freedom and quality, the gospel of hard work, and the belief in material progress- manifest themselves today.
Oh, and this blog gets its name from Banksy’s stunt at the London Zoo because the statement can come off as pretty profound in lieu of Neil Postman’s Entertaining Ourselves to Death, but because penguins are so cute!!!
